Federal authorities has entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and possible further challenges.
