European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In related legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked attempts to cut federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge stated the case was “another example” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, following concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
